Abstract art–why do I choose this method? My one word answer: Freedom.
Abstract art by nature is pure creative freedom, it is completely open to whatever you wish to make it, whatever you wish to discover, to experience, to explore. The only limitations here are self-imposed.
Personally, one of the ways I approach abstract art is as a means of working with intuition. By choosing not to plan anything, and just following whatever impulses arise without question, I learn to trust those intuitive impulses.
I do have self-imposed limitations–my choice of support, materials, size etc. So, I do start with a framework of sorts, and over time I have developed different methods that I prefer, certain frameworks that I like to use. However, the practice is still the same, waiting for an impulse and just going with it. The impulse could be a feeling of color, or shape or pattern, or sometimes physical body movement, it could be anything really.
The process is exhilarating and fascinating for me. I never know what is going to happen! As a child I loved surprises, so it makes sense for me, I get huge enjoyment out of this process of discovery that seems to have no end. I don’t have to come up with ideas, I just follow impulses, and impulses always arise.
The most profound part of this process has been it’s effect on my personal life, when I began to experiment with approaching life in the same way I approach art. I have found, like many things, it’s much easier to accomplish on paper. It is a never ending process, and one I am eternally grateful to be a part of.
